Progressive numerical model validation of a bowstring-arch railway bridge based on a structural health monitoring system

This paper presents a progressive numerical model validation of bowstring-arch railway bridge based on the analysis experimental data from different structural response measurements, namely, static deformations under environmental actions, modal vibrations, and transient dynamic responses traffic loads. work also addresses an integrated approach that uses health monitoring (SHM) measurements in combination with FE modelling to understand behaviour long-span complex bridge. A progressively phased situ SHM system has provided diverse set streams ranging measurement operational The first phase consists defining detailed baseline finite-element (FE) bridge, envisaging initial condition structure immediately after construction, its using parameters (natural frequencies mode shapes) derived ambient vibration test. Since overall in-service deflections general do not exercise non-linear regime response, second focuses temperature validate system, particularly at bearing devices, slow actions. third final which provides greater sensitivity detection due effects high-amplitude actions induced by regular train loading profiles. To guarantee accuracy model, it was necessary use contact restrictions some specific devices. improvement is line changes detected devices through visual inspections. As result, updated capable reproducing modal, static, achieved, showing very good agreement between data. In future applications, this will be useful for assessing loads, namely identify damages support adoption life cycle maintenance strategies integration systems (stochastic) load failure models.
